Photo gifts that get used, and when to order each one

A photo book of the year, a framed print, a mug, an ornament. What each one is good for, what it costs, and the last day to order for Christmas.

A square photo book titled Our Year, next to an open spread of family photos with the caption Easter morning.

The best photo gift is one that gets picked up again. A book that comes off the coffee table every time someone visits. A mug that’s somebody’s mug. An ornament that comes out of the box every December and gets a “remember that year?”

We added a set of photo gifts this fall, and every one of them works the way our cards do: you send the photos, a person here touches them up and checks them, you approve a proof, and nothing is made until you do. Shipping is free anywhere in the US. Here’s what each one is good for.

A photo book of the year

For: the grandparents, the family that never prints anything, or yourself.

This is the one that takes a little time, and the one that gets kept. Add your photos and they fill the pages in the order you choose them. Then change any page to one, two, three or four photos, and add captions. “Easter morning” under the egg hunt is the kind of thing nobody remembers to write down until it’s in a book.

A person looks at every page for blurry photos, faces too close to the edge and empty spots before you see the proof. If you want something fixed, say so in the notes: brighten the dark ones, crop out a stranger, put the beach photos together.

One tip: start now, even if you finish later. The book doesn’t save itself while you’re working, but photos you add are kept for 90 days. Pick the photos on a quiet evening, then order.

A framed print, or a framed canvas

For: the one photo everybody loves. The wedding, the new baby, the whole family on the porch.

Both can be one photo edge to edge, a photo with a name band, or three photos side by side. If the photo you love is a little dark or a little crooked, tell us. A person touches up every photo before it prints.

A photo mug

For: the coworker, the teacher, the grandpa who drinks coffee all day.

Your photos printed all the way around a white mug, with a name if you like: 11 oz for $24, 15 oz for $27, or a 12 oz enamel camp mug for $29. The preview shows both sides, so you can see where the handle falls before you order.

A photo ornament

For: anyone with a tree, and every new baby’s first Christmas.

A 3-inch ornament with your photo, and a name and year if you like: a white ceramic circle for $19, or a clear glass circle or heart for $22. Make one every year and the tree becomes a family album.

When to order for Christmas

These are the last days to order and still have it in hand for Christmas. Earlier is better: the date assumes you approve your proof quickly.

The bottom line

Pick the gift by where it will live. On the shelf, a photo book. On the wall, a print or a canvas. In the kitchen, a mug. On the tree, an ornament. Whichever you choose, send us the photo, and a person here will make sure it prints the way you remember it.
